Quick answer
The quietest beaches near Patong are Tri-Trang (a calm strip just south, 10 minutes by road), Paradise Beach (a small managed cove with an entry fee), Freedom Beach (white sand reached by longtail boat, roughly 1,200–2,500 THB return per boat) and Kalim (rocky, best for sunsets). All are best from November to April. For a full beach day with more space, Kamala and Karon are the next bays.
One of Patong's underrated strengths is how quickly you can leave it. Within ten to twenty minutes by road or boat, the busy crescent gives way to small coves with clear water, jungle behind the sand and far fewer people. Here are the four worth knowing, plus the two bigger bays next door.
Which quiet beaches are closest to Patong?
- Tri-Trang Beach: just south of Patong's southern headland, about 10 minutes by road.
- Paradise Beach: a little further along the same road, a small managed cove.
- Freedom Beach: on the far side of the southern headland, reached by longtail boat or a steep path.
- Kalim Beach: at the northern end of Patong Bay, five minutes from the north end of Patong Beach.
None has a regular songthaew service. Use a tuk-tuk, ride-hailing app or scooter, and if you take a tuk-tuk, agree the return pick-up time before you are dropped off.
What is Tri-Trang Beach like?
Tri-Trang is a narrow strip of sand on the southern side of the headland, backed by trees and a few hotels, with shallow water and almost no water-sports traffic. It is the easiest escape from Patong: calm in the dry season, quiet on weekdays and with a couple of simple beach bars and food stalls. The sand narrows a lot at high tide, and the shallows are rocky in places, so water shoes help. Come in the late afternoon for a swim and stay for sunset.
Is Paradise Beach worth the entry fee?
Paradise Beach is a small cove run as a managed beach club. You pay an entry fee at the gate, sometimes partly redeemable for food or drinks, and in return get loungers, a restaurant, showers, toilets and a tidy, relatively uncrowded beach. Snorkelling around the rocks at either end can be good when the sea is calm.
It is worth it if you want facilities and calm without Patong's scale, especially with children. If you prefer a wild, free beach, Freedom or Tri-Trang suit better. The beach club has also hosted occasional evening parties, so check what is on if you want a quiet day.
How do you get to Freedom Beach?
Freedom Beach is the postcard: a curve of fine white sand backed by jungle on the far side of the southern headland, with clear water and no road access. There are two ways in.
- Longtail boat from the south end of Patong Beach, about 15 minutes. Agree the total price per boat, the pick-up time and any entry fee before boarding, and pay at least part on the return.
- On foot via a steep jungle path from the road beyond Paradise Beach. It takes around 20–30 minutes each way, is slippery after rain and is not suitable for small children or flip-flops.
A small fee is sometimes collected at the beach for access and upkeep. Facilities are limited to a basic restaurant and drinks, so bring water, sun protection and cash, and take all your rubbish back. Arrive before 11am to beat the boat groups.
Is Kalim Beach good for swimming?
Not really. Kalim, at the northern end of Patong Bay, is more rock than sand, especially at low tide. It is a place for golden hour: seafront restaurants along the coast road look straight into the sunset. In the monsoon season, a reef break off Kalim draws surfers when the swell is up. For swimming, walk back to the north end of Patong Beach, which is calm and sandy.
What about Kamala and Karon as next-bay options?
If you want a bigger beach with fewer people rather than a tiny cove, go one bay further. Kamala, about 15–20 minutes north over the hill, is a long, relaxed beach with a village feel. Karon, about 15–20 minutes south, is a wide, long beach with soft sand and space to spread out. Both have lifeguards in season, and both get strong waves and rip currents in the monsoon, just like Patong.

How much does it cost to reach the coves?
| Destination | How | Typical cost (THB) |
|---|---|---|
| Tri-Trang Beach | Tuk-tuk, one way | 200–400 |
| Paradise Beach | Tuk-tuk, one way | 250–450 |

| Freedom Beach | Longtail boat, return, per boat | 1,200–2,500 |
| Freedom Beach | Beach access fee, if collected | 100–200 |
| Kalim Beach | Tuk-tuk, one way | 150–300 |
| Kamala or Karon | Tuk-tuk or ride-hailing car, one way | 300–600 |

What should you bring to the quiet coves?
The small coves have fewer shops and no convenience stores on the sand, so pack as if you were leaving town for the day.
- Cash in small notes: entry fees, boat fares and beach bars rarely take cards.
- At least a litre of water per person, plus snacks if you're going to Freedom Beach.
- Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and something for shade; there are few umbrellas outside Paradise Beach.
- Mask and snorkel, and water shoes for the rocky shallows.
- A bag for your rubbish — bins are scarce and the coves stay beautiful only if people carry it out.
- The phone number of your tuk-tuk driver, or a charged phone for ride-hailing back.
Which quiet beach should you pick?
- Least effort, calm water: Tri-Trang.
- Facilities and calm, good with children: Paradise Beach.
- The most beautiful sand: Freedom Beach, by boat in the dry season.
- Sunset and dinner: Kalim.
- A big beach with space: Kamala or Karon.
All of these coves face the open Andaman Sea. From May to October, check the flags and sea conditions before going; boats to Freedom Beach may not run, and small coves have no lifeguards.

Frequently asked
- How much is a longtail boat to Freedom Beach from Patong?
- Longtail boats from the south end of Patong Beach typically charge around 1,200–2,500 THB per boat for a return trip, shared by up to about eight people (indicative, November 2026). Agree the total price, the pick-up time and whether there is a beach entry fee before boarding, and pay the balance on the way back. Boats don't run when the sea is rough.
- Which beach near Patong is best for snorkelling?
- Freedom Beach and Paradise Beach have the best snorkelling within easy reach, around the rocks at each end of the bay, with small reef fish and some coral in calm conditions. Visibility is best from December to April. In the monsoon months, waves and murky water make snorkelling poor and sometimes dangerous. Bring your own mask, and never stand on coral.
