Three neighbouring west-coast beaches with very different personalities. Here is how Patong, Karon and Kata compare on distance, beach, nightlife, families and price.

Patong local and editor

Quick answer

Choose Patong if you want nightlife, the widest choice of restaurants and everything within walking distance. Choose Karon for a long, uncrowded beach and quieter evenings. Choose Kata for families, a prettier compact bay, green-season surfing and a relaxed restaurant scene. Karon is about 15–20 minutes' drive south of Patong and Kata 20–30 minutes, so visiting the other two is easy whichever you pick.

Patong, Karon and Kata sit in a row on Phuket's west coast, separated by forested headlands. They share the same sea and the same seasons, but they feel very different once the sun goes down. Patong is the busy, built-up town; Karon is long, open and low-key; Kata is a smaller bay with a village feel. Picking the right one matters more than picking the right hotel.

How far apart are Patong, Karon and Kata?

Karon starts just over the hill south of Patong. The coast road between them climbs steeply with sharp bends, so even though the distance is short, the drive takes 15–20 minutes. Kata is a few minutes further on, past a small headland at the south end of Karon. The public songthaews mostly run between each beach and Phuket Town rather than along the coast between beaches, so beach-hopping usually means a taxi, a ride-hailing app or a scooter.

How do the beaches themselves compare?

Patong

About 3 km of sand in a deep, sheltered bay, backed by the beach road. It is the busiest beach of the three, with lounger zones, jet skis, parasailing and vendors. From November to April the water is usually calm and good for swimming; from May to October waves and rip currents are common.

Karon

Long, wide and open, with coarse golden sand that squeaks underfoot. There is far more space per person than in Patong and much less commercial activity on the sand itself. Karon faces the open sea, so in the green season the surf can be heavy and rip currents dangerous; it is one of the beaches where respecting the red flags matters most.

Kata

A smaller, curved bay with the little island of Koh Pu offshore, a gentle slope and, on flat days, some snorkelling around the rocks at the northern end. From roughly May to October it becomes one of Phuket's main learn-to-surf beaches. Kata Noi, a separate small cove just to the south, is quieter still.

Which beach has the best nightlife?

Patong, by a wide margin. Bangla Road, the clubs, the live-music bars, the late-night food and the sheer choice exist only there. Karon has a small cluster of bars and restaurants that stays relaxed, and Kata has a handful of bars, beach clubs and live-music spots where the evening tends to end earlier. If you want to go out most nights, stay in Patong. If you want one or two big nights, staying in Karon or Kata and taking a car to Patong works fine, but budget for the ride back late at night, when prices are higher and cars are fewer.

The Bangla Road guide shows what you would be giving up, or travelling in for.

Which beach is best for families?

Kata is the most family-friendly of the three: the bay is compact, the beach is the right size for small legs, and the area around it is calm in the evening. Karon suits families who like space and quiet, as long as everyone respects the flags in the green season. Patong can work for families who stay at the northern end, where the beach is calmer and bars are few, and who want a big mall, a wide choice of food and easy logistics close by. All three have lifeguards on duty in the main swimming zones during the day, and the rule is the same everywhere: swim between the red-and-yellow flags and never when a red flag is flying.

How do prices compare between Patong, Karon and Kata?

Patong has the widest range at both ends, from dorm beds to large resorts, and the most competition, which keeps mid-range prices sharp. Karon is often slightly cheaper for a comparable room. Kata's smaller supply and family appeal can push beachfront rates a little higher. Restaurant prices in the tourist strips of all three are similar; Patong has more cheap local food simply because it is bigger.

Everyday practicalities also tilt toward Patong. It has a large mall, big supermarkets, dozens of pharmacies and clinics, a government hospital and more ATMs and exchange booths than you will ever need. Karon and Kata have convenience stores, small supermarkets, pharmacies and clinics, which cover most holiday needs, but for a big shop, a specialist doctor or a phone repair you will usually head to Patong or Phuket Town. On a long stay, or with young children, that difference adds up.

Can you stay in one beach and visit the others easily?

Yes, and many people do. A ride-hailing car between Patong and Karon or Kata is quick outside rush hour, and taxis and tuk-tuks wait at the main junctions of all three beaches. Renting a scooter makes beach-hopping cheap, but the hill road between Patong and Karon is steep, bendy and has a poor accident record, so it is not the place to learn. You need a licence with a motorcycle entitlement and a helmet, and your travel insurance may not pay out without both.

Costs and the trade-offs between apps, taxis, tuk-tuks and scooters are covered in getting around Patong.

So which beach should you choose?

  • First trip, want to walk to everything and go out at night: Patong, ideally central or north of Bangla.
  • Couple or friends wanting space on the sand and quiet evenings: Karon.
  • Family with young children, or you want to try surfing in the green season: Kata.
  • Long stay on a budget: Patong's inland streets have the most monthly-rental choice.
  • Mostly diving or island trips from Chalong Pier: Kata or Karon save some driving each morning.

If Patong wins, the best areas to stay in Patong guide breaks the town down street by street, and the quiet beaches near Patong guide covers the calmer coves you can reach for a day.

Frequently asked

Can you walk between Patong, Karon and Kata?
Karon and Kata are close enough to walk between: from south Karon to the middle of Kata takes roughly 20–30 minutes along the road over a small headland. Patong to Karon is a different story. The coast road climbs a steep, winding hill with little or no pavement and fast traffic, so use a taxi, a ride-hailing app or, if you are an experienced rider, a scooter.
Is Patong or Kata better for families?
Kata is usually the easier choice for families: the bay is smaller and prettier, evenings are calm, and there are fewer bars between hotels and the beach. Patong works well if you stay at the quieter northern end and want more restaurants and a big mall within reach. On all three beaches, swim between the flags and stay out of the water when red flags are up, which is common from May to October.
